Anne Carolyn Sawyer Rooks



Anne Carolyn Sawyer Rooks went to her heavenly home October 7, 2017.

She was born September 20, 1934 in Burgaw NC.

Anne graduated from Burgaw High School and attended her freshman year of college at East Carolina College. Anne married Fred, the love of her life, in 1953 and after having 3 daughters, completed her education at Wilmington College. She was a teacher with Sunset Park and Blair Elementary for 30 Years. Mrs. Rooks was loved by her students and made a huge difference in their lives. Even in her 80’s she continued to receive cards and calls from past students and recognized wherever she went in Wilmington. She was a member of NCEA and Alpha Delta Kappa.

Anne was a faithful servant of the Lord and a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She served her church as leader for the Methodist Youth Fellowship, Sunday School Teacher, serving on committees and various missions, prayer group, and so much more. After her retirement, she became actively involved as a leader with Bible Study Fellowship.

God, her faith, and praying for others were always her main priorities in life. She was an amazing Prayer Warrior. Her loving relationship with her beloved husband, Fred, was admired by all as a true example of a strong and loving marriage. Anne has three daughters – Becky, Mary Anne, and Pam - and had a very close and unique relationship with each of them. She always made you feel that you were special. She loved her grandchildren greatly, making a huge impact on each of their lives.

In remembrance of Anne Rooks, she would want you to always be kind to others, pray faithfully for each other, and love each other like Jesus loves us.

Anne was preceded in death by husband, Leon Fredrick (Fred) Rooks; parents, Arthur and Norma Rowe Sawyer; brother, Rowe Sawyer; and granddaughters, Melissa Cowan and Natasha Lee

Surviving are children, Rebecca Hughes (Mike), Mary Anne Collins (Jim), Pamela Cooke (Travis); grandchildren: Jimmy Collins, Kathryn Collins, Garrison Cooke, Meredith Fitch (David); great grandchildren: Courtney Lee, Virginia and Lee Fitch; brother, Louis Sawyer; loving Friend & Sister in law - Betty Humbles Brown; caregiver and friend: Mary Ann Clay; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends both old and new.

Service will be at 2:00 on Tuesday, Oct. 10th at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church
Visitation will be from 1-2 prior to the service in the Wesley Gathering Hall
Burial will be at the Watha United Methodist Church Cemetery. Watha United Methodist Church, 160 Camp Kirkwood Rd, Willard, NC 28478

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Anne to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice, which made her final days peaceful, or the Watha United Methodist Church.
