Alene Ritter Whaley, age 86, of Wilmington, NC went to her heavenly home on November 30, 2018, at the Lower Cape Fear HospiceCare Center.
She was born June 6, 1932 in Magnolia, NC to the late Cornelius Leon Ritter and Vernette Dixon.
Alene held many titles throughout her life such as Miss Warsaw High School in 1951 shortly before marrying Hobart, the love of her life. Her most beloved titles in life were wife, mother, Mimi and homemaker. Alene loved the Lord and gave of her time and talents at Winter Park Baptist Church as an active member for 59 years. She loved to serve others and volunteered as a Pink Lady at New Hanover Regional Medical Center as well as Babies Hospital at Wrightsville Beach. She also volunteered at the International Seaman’s Center and worked in the gardens at the Treatment Center by New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Alene enjoyed fishing and flower gardening. She enjoyed traveling and was not shy about trying activities such as snorkeling in the Caribbean, river rafting in Alaska, hiking on a glacier and kayaking at Fort Fisher. She also owned a Merle Norman store, a dress shop and beauty shop during the seventies and early eighties. Alene and Hobart also enjoyed monthly dances as members of their dance club for over 40 years.
Left to remember her are her husband of 67 years, Hobart Whaley; daughters, Sylvia Lewis and her husband Mike and Karen Cobb and her husband Charles; sisters, Lois Brinson, Elanor Frederick, Edythe Allen, and Nan Ritter; grandchildren, Kristen Williams and her husband Brad, Jon Lewis and his wife Angel, and Nicholas Faulkner and wife Sherilyn; great grandchildren, Jordan and Will Williams; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Alene and Hobart’s Sunday School Class (Couples for Christ) for their support, love and prayers during recent months and most recently Lower Cape Fear Hospice for their exceptional care provided to Alene and support given to the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alene’s name to Winter Park Baptist Church at 4700 Wrightsville Ave, Wilmington 28403; or Lower Cape Fear Hospice at 1406 Physicians Dr, Wilmington 28401.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, December 5, 2018, at Winter Park Baptist Church with Pastor Paul Burgess and Pastor Mark Teachey officiating. Visitation will be at one hour prior to the service at the church.
