Melva Jones Matthews



Melva Jones Matthews, 84, of Wallace left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Saturday, December 2, 2017 from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was born on April 9, 1933 in Pender County and was the daughter of the late James and Bessie Johnson Jones. Also lovingly remembered is her loving husband, Charles B. Matthews; her only son, Darrell Matthews; sister, Elizabeth Larrimore and brother, James Jones.

Melva was a dedicated member of Willard Baptist Church for over 60 years.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her devoted daughters, Shirley Matthews James and husband Johnnie of Hampstead, Cynthia Matthews Merritt and husband Glenn of Watha, Patricia Matthews Wells and husband Barry of Willard; grandchildren, Dwayne Keene, Misty Steffee and husband Robert, Jennifer Merritt, Christopher Merritt and wife Amy, Melissa Matthews, Melinda Lippard and husband Jacob, Amanda Gant and husband Patrick and Kelly Lanier and husband Lantz; 16 great grandchildren; sisters, Lewellyn Knowles of Wallace and Elsie Nicholson of Parkhills, MO and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that loved Melva dearly.

Melva was a loving wife and caring mother, grandmother and sister. She found great joy in the simplest of things, but her greatest joy was family. Melva was a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace; and to those who knew her, “an instrument of God’s love on this earth.” Being a diligent homemaker, she filled her home with love and welcomed all who entered. Melva was a great seamstress who enjoyed doing alterations for numerous people and businesses. She was active in her church throughout the years and was blessed with a love for the Lord and a faith that brought her through the past few years of her life. Melva will surely be missed but cherished memories of her will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Willard Baptist Church with her pastor, the Reverend David Knowles and her son-in-law, the Reverend Barry Wells officiating.

Burial will follow the funeral service at Riverview Memorial Park in Watha.

The family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:00pm on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service at Willard Baptist Church.
