Obituary

Thomas Leon Bigford, 78, of Atkinson was welcomed home by his Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 21, 2018.

He was born June 7, 1940 in Bladen County, the son of the late Thomas Moore Bigford and Katie Benson Bigford. Also remembered is his brother, Herman Bigford who preceded Leon in death.

Leon is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Becky Malpass Bigford; sons, Rickey Bigford and Randy Bigford (Sandy); grandchildren, Amber Kinlaw (Cam), Justin Bigford, and Carter Bigford; great grandchildren, Ayden and Brailyn; sisters, Mary Woodcock, Annette Horrell and Ruth Pridgen; brothers, Louis Bigford (Trina) and Charles Bigford; many nieces, nephews and extended family.

Leon found great joy in the simplest of things, but his greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a diligent worker and always took good care of his family. In years past, Leon enjoyed hunting and fishing in God’s beautiful forest and rivers. Leon always had a hand stretched out to help others and a heart ready to show his love of Jesus. He lived his life to help others. Leon was loved and will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at United Faith Fellowship in Atkinson with service beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The Rev. Don Yerby will conduct the service. Burial will follow in Holmes Hill Cemetery.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff on the 10th floor at New Hanover Regional Medical Center (they nicknamed Leon, Papa) and the staff at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center for the compassionate care given to Leon and to them throughout Leon’s illness and passing.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation, 1414 Physicians Dr., Wilmington, NC 28401.
