Obituary

Mavis Evelyn Lewis Gore, 78, of Currie passed gently from her earthly life on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Pender Memorial Hospital.

She was born August 11, 1939 in Pender County, one of 14 children born to David Jasper and Eva Almira Horrell Lewis. In addition to her parents, Mavis was preceded in death by her son, Carl Jeffrey Lewis; siblings, Alfred, Woody, Brantley, Buddy, Doug and Marcella Lewis as well as Virginia L. Gantt and Genevieve L. Grimsley.

Mavis is survived by her sons, Tony Fontana (Cindy) and Joseph Sandy; daughter, Melissa Woodcock (Steve); daughter-in-law, Sherry Lewis; numerous grandchildren, including Kayla Hill who spent much time with Grannie Mavis; many great grandchildren; siblings, Elsie Lewis Miles, Julia Jacqueline Lewis Esmiol (Danny), David “Buck” J. Lewis, Jr., Billy Lewis, and Debbie Lewis Watson (Eddie); and many other extended family and friends.

Mavis was a faithful member of Currie Community Baptist Church.

Mavis loved her family and was a joy to know. She was a strong and courageous lady who never let any grass grow under her feet and she worked well beyond the age of retirement. Her career included many facets as she worked at Pender County School System, Cape Fear Academy, Covenant Trucking Co., Bandana’s Restaurant, and Sam’s Club. Also, Mavis loved to catch a fish or two and was an amazing cook and seamstress. Her sweet smile and enduring spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved Mavis.

The family will receive friends 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 30, 2018 at Currie Community Baptist Church, 28396 NC Hwy 210, Currie, NC, with Celebration of Life service at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary.

The family extends sincere gratitude to the staffs of New Hanover Regional Medical Center (7th Floor), Pender Memorial Hospital and the Laurels of Pender for the compassionate and caring services rendered to our dear Mavis and to us, Mavis’ family.
