Obituary

Hattie Mae Johnson Murray, 79, of Rose Hill left this earthly life for her eternal rest on Sunday, February 4, 2018 from New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

She was born on March 23, 1938 in Duplin County and was one of 10 children born to the late Jack and Nursie Reaves Johnson. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Andrew Murray and siblings, Eloise Johnson, Dorothy Giddings, Ruby Wallace, Jack Johnson, Jr. and James Johnson.

Hattie was a dedicated member of Wallace Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 62 years, Arnold Frank Murray, Sr. of the home; sons, Michael David Murray and Arnold Frank Murray, Jr. and wife Wendy, all of Rose Hill; daughter, Julie M. Thigpen and husband, Shane of Cleveland, TX; grandchildren, MaryKate Murray, Jesse Thigpen, Justin Thigpen, Jarrett Thigpen, Rachel Thigpen and Jeremy Thigpen; great grandchildren, Jesse Thigpen, Jr. and Cason Thigpen; sisters, Catherine Jones of Wallace, Mattie Cavenaugh of Rose Hill, Frances Hall and husband, Bill of Magnolia and Lois Mobley and husband, Harold of Rose Hill and numerous nieces, nephews and friends who loved Hattie dearly.

Hattie was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother and sister. She found great joy in the simplest of things, but her greatest joy was family. Hattie had a quiet and gentle spirit who never bragged nor was she haughty or proud. She graduated from Wallace High School as Salutatorian of her class. For numerous years, Hattie was secretary at Mickey’s Alignment in Wallace. Due to health issues she had to go to work part-time and she worked right up to the week before she left us. Hattie was a godly woman who was faithful to her God, her family and her church. She enjoyed spending time with her beloved husband, her children and grandchildren. With an humble and caring spirit, Hattie loved everybody and was loved in return. She was indeed a woman of uncommon character, beauty and grace, “an instrument of God’s love on this earth.” Hattie will surely be missed but treasured memories will remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
