Johnny Franklin Grimmer, 78, of Fayetteville and formerly of Pender County, NC left this earthly life for his eternal rest on June 21, 2018.
He was born on February 18, 1940 in Craven County, NC and was the son of the late Harry Albert and Bercha Adell Gilbert Grimmer. He was also predeceased by his brother, Albert "Al" Grimmer.
Johnny proudly served his country in the US Air Force for 22 years, serving in Vietnam two different segments of his military career. After retirement from the Air Force he continued to serve his community as a Wallace Police Officer and Pender County Deputy.
Surviving to cherish his memory is his loving daughter, Karen Grimmer Russo of Wetumpka, Alabama; his six grandchildren, Adam, Rachel, David, Joshua, Christianna and Gianna Russo; his brother, Harry C. Grimmer and wife, Elise of Charlotte; sisters, Bertie Brown and husband, Hershall of Jacksonville and Joyce Matthews of New Bern; former wife and best friend, Annette Grimmer Hammond and husband, Clyde of Fayetteville and numerous extended family and friends.
Johnny was a loving father and caring brother who loved his family dearly. With a love for his country he served without hesitation to help preserve our freedom. He enjoyed law enforcement and working with people. Before Alzheimer’s took over Johnny’s life, he gave his heart to Jesus, was baptized and joined Holly Ridge Church of God. Since his new birth, Johnny was never the same. He loved his family more than ever, loved his Lord and served Him to the best of his ability. Johnny’s family is grateful to God for his life and for the new life he now has with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Johnny was there to assist my husband on numerous occasions when he had trouble with a vehicle stop in Pender County. I also got to know JOHNNY through the court system. He was a fine person. I am sorry for your loss. Mary O'Briant.

One of my two best buddies for life, from the second grade and on, at Penderlea School. We were teammates, classmates, and best friends who enjoyed happy, growing up, and adventuresome lives together. We were on the basketball team together, (with Johnny as star center and me, a scrub), glue club, boys quartet, every school drama play, and every class. We double dated girls together, and always hung out; and, oh, the happy stories I could tell. We both served our country in Vietnam and it finally took him down, fifty- so years later. A fine man, a best friend, and a great patriot.
