Obituary
Vernon Charles Cartrette, 83, of Atkinson passed from his earthly life on Monday, February 5, 2018 at his home.
He was born January 1, 1935 in Columbus County, the son of the late Jesse James and Bessie Pinyan Cartrette.
Vernon leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 60 years, Anne Marie McGreal Cartrette; daughters, Julia C. Weaver (RW) and Theresa C. Gore (Tim); son, Matthew C. Cartrette (Pam); grandchildren, Worth, James, Joshua, Anne Marie, Victoria and Elizabeth; great grandchildren, Claire and Emma; siblings, Elizabeth Branson (Lee), Bernice Griffin, Willa Dean Edwards (Ken) Donald Cartrette (Judy) and Bonnie Williams; many extended family and friends.
He proudly served his country honorably in the US Army and US Army Reserves. By career Vernon was a top notch builder and enjoyed every day he worked. He was most generous with his knowledge of building and of his time if help was needed.
Vernon was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend who especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren as they were a shining light in his life. Vernon and Anne Marie instilled Christian values and wonderful life skills in their three children that he was so proud of. Spending time on Black River fishing, working in his garden, and playing his guitar were things Vernon enjoyed. We rejoice that his long struggle to breathe is over and that we have a special guardian angel watching over us. But his departure has left an empty place at our family table, in his recliner and mostly in our hearts.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at Quinn-McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel with funeral beginning at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Buddy Seay will conduct the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to Community Home Care and Hospice, 497 Olde Waterford Way, Suite 208, Leland, NC 28451, American Lung Association, 401 Hawthorne Lane, Suite 110 #298, Charlotte, NC 28204, or to a charity of your choice.

Celebrating the life of Vernon Charles Cartrette
Thank you for signing Vernon Charles Cartrette's Guestbook

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. Be assured that soon our Heavenly Father will give those who have fallen asleep in death the opportunity to live again. You can find comfort in Jesus words at John 5:28, 29 “The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” God promises that “he will do away with death forever, and the Sovereign Lord Jehovah will wipe away the tears from all faces.” (Isa. 25:8). May these scriptures bring comfort and calmness of heart to you at this time. Please accept our deepest sympathy.
