Bernard “Barney” Harold McWilliams, born November 15, 1941, left this world suddenly and unexpectedly before dawn on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC.
Barney brought joy to all who knew him with his wit and sense of humor and touched the lives of countless people with his music. A talented and dedicated violist, he taught at several universities and schools, as well as privately. He performed all over the country, including at Carnegie Hall and in the White House. As a member of the U.S. Army Strolling Strings ensemble, he performed for presidents Nixon and Johnson, visiting dignitaries, heads of state, astronauts, and celebrities. Barney performed with the Wilmington Symphony for over a decade and was active in it right up to the moment of his passing. He was a friend to man and animal alike and is truly missed.
Barney is survived by the love of his life Maren (Stegelvik) McWilliams; his son, Bruce McWilliams and wife, Ashley; daughter, Margie McWilliams; step-grandchildren, Lewyn Stull and Lyza Stull; and his kid sister, Lori Coit and husband, Mike.
Barney was preceded in death by his father, Harold “Mac” Percival McWilliams; mother, Margaret “Marge” Eleanor (Meggett) McWilliams; and sister, Julie Jonke.
His funeral service will be at 1:30 pm Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church in downtown Wilmington with Minister Dan Lewis officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens.
