David Ramsey Porter

     David Ramsey Porter of Long Creek, North Carolina, a beloved brother, uncle and friend, peacefully passed away early in the morning on March 18, 2024, at age 76, while in the care of the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

     David was born in New Hanover Hospital in Wilmington, North Carolina  on March 27, 1947 to the late John Edwin Porter and Hildred Ramsey Porter. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jeffrey Allen Porter and John “Jay” Edwin Porter, Jr.  

     He is survived by his brother, George Alexander Porter and his wife, Mary Wilson Byrd; niece, Kristie Porter; nephews, James Porter and Brent Newton; sister-in-law, Ann Porter; and his best friend, Little Bull.

     He grew up on what is now Porter Road in Currie, NC. He was the middle child and had a very a close relationship with his brothers and to the land. Since a boy he always enjoyed hunting and fishing in creeks, rivers and streams. David was a partner in a construction company and built many houses and business across Pender and New Hanover Counties. He also gardened and enjoyed preparing smoked meat and sharing it.

     During the past few years David depended on the care and help of others. Special thanks go out to George Porter, his youngest brother, who tirelessly took care of David. Also special thanks to Gwen Cochran who has also helped to provide good care for David. Other friends have taken him to doctor’s appointments and helped out in other ways and we greatly appreciate all of you and your love for David. We also want to thank the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare where David spent his last couple of days in comfort and peace.

     A memorial service will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Quinn McGowen Funeral Home Burgaw Chapel  with  Rev. Merrell McKoy conducting the service. 

     The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.

     The family kindly requests that any donations be made in David’s memory to the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Foundation, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401.
